The Brecon Beacons National Park covers 500 square miles of the most wonderful scenery - including a patchwork quilt of agricultural landscape, spectacular summits, phenomenal ridge-walks and an incredible geology ... made even more magnificent by the wildlife and flora that change with each season.
Allow us to create a bespoke adventure for you and your family and let us guide you through the historic landscape as you create memories together that will last for years to come. Examples of the adventures we can offer include: Guided Hill Walks and Mountain Adventures (single day) There are so many wonderful sights and historical sites within the Brecon Beacons from Roman forts to Standing Stones, from waterfalls to cratered shakeholes, from river valleys to splendid ridge walks. Let us create a day for you that will allow you to explore this incredible landscape while learning about the layers of history under our feet. Geo-Caching and Orienteering (single day) You may not believe us but there are pots of treasure buried all over the UK and we can lead you in Geo-Caching (the digital 'treasure hunt') to find some of the best ones using GPS (Global Positioning Systems) and digital maps. Our orienteering days are a lot of fun using small areas of specially chosen hillside and photo-cards to generate a bit of competitive spirit as we race against each other to find the locations at which each card was taken. These days are the perfect introduction to the mountains for families with young children or those who may not appreciate a full day of seemingly just trudging across bare hillsides. We can make the days as long or short, as easy or as challenging as you like.
Sunset or Sunrise Mountain Adventures (single day) We are hooked on being out and about on the hills (and on the water, come to think about it) after dark. Whether there is a full moon or no moon, the experience is completely different to being out during daylight; the sights, the sounds, the feeling of the wind and the sense of exposure and wilderness are all much more tangible. Once you book with us, and tell us what you want to experience on your walk, we will plan the best route to meet your needs (and to maximise the exposure to sunrise or sunset). Crashed Aircraft of the Brecon Beacons (single day) In addition to the incredible beauty within the Brecon Beacons National Park, there is also much history to be discovered. Perhaps most interesting are the remnants and relics of World War Two which show the strategic importance of the area as well as the efforts and sacrifice of the men and women fighting for the survival of the free-world. Allow us to show you some of the most inspiring sites, sharing with you the background story and significance of each one. Navigation Coaching (single day) Mountains and hills are fantastic places to explore while enjoying the tranquillity of the open spaces or the ruggedness of the peaks and gullies, but, the ability to find your way by map and compass (as well as being able to give your location by Grid Reference if anything went wrong) is paramount. Join us for a day and we will coach you through all the major navigation techniques that you will need to be confident in your own abilities when you forge ahead with your own adventures. In a typical Navigation Coaching day with us you will explore the following topics (but you will determine exactly what we cover on the day based on your needs and your current navigation abilities): Use of different maps and scales Different methods of orientating the map (setting it to match the ground) Navigation by map features and contour lines 6-figure Grid References Use of a compass, walking on a bearing and using bearings to locate yourself on the map Experimenting with using 'handrails', 'aiming off', 'overshoot features' and 'attack points' Measuring distance on map and using 'timing' and 'pacing' to do the same on the ground Navigate difficult terrain and 'box' around obstacles Use 'aspect of slope' and 'resections' to locate yourself on the map Technical Mountain Skills (single day) Moving on from simply navigating through the wilderness, there are a number of features and obstacles that you might find block your way. In a typical Technical Mountain Skills day we will examine the following topics (but you will determine exactly what we cover on the day based on your needs and your current navigation abilities): River crossings Use of a 'confidence' rope to support people on ascents and descents Security on steep ground Group management and control Dealing with emergencies and injuries Campcraft - choosing a tent, wild camp site and establishing a valuable camp 'a4adventure' will provide you with the technical kit (maps, compass etc), qualified guide and full safety equipment needed for your adventure.
